Through our continued partnership with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) focused on helping data dashboard teams strengthen their long-term financial sustainability, Envoy joined the “Forum on Advancing the Science and Practice of Actionable Public Health Data Dashboards” hosted by RWJF and partners at Rutgers - New Brunswick’s School of Communication and Information. The forum brought together 50+ participants of various backgrounds, including research scientists and data analysts, academics, healthcare professionals, and policy makers. The goal of this forum was to discuss the launch and growth of health-based data dashboards, including identifying and sharing  strategies for effectively managing and scaling data tools and infrastructure. In addition, the forum focused heavily on improving the actionability of data dashboards and increasing stakeholder engagement in the design, implementation, and communication  of these dashboards.

Envoy moderated a panel titled “Funding and Sustaining Public Health Dashboards,” which discussed the importance of exploring financial sustainability through revenue diversification and fee-for-service opportunities. Drawing from various perspectives, including business, government, higher education and research, panelists spoke on navigating shifting funding and policy priorities, and provided thoughts on how data dashboards can ensure organizational resilience in the midst of funding uncertainties. The conversation provided attendees with an understanding of the sustainability challenges that data dashboards face, as well as strategies and best practices for maximizing financial resources.

Another key focus of the forum centered on the human side of data, emphasizing the need to ensure dashboards are built with community input and partnership. Conversations highlighted inclusive design practices and participatory research approaches that can help ensure dashboards are both equitable and actionable. Panels and presentations throughout the two-days explored the evolving role of public health dashboards in tracking community well-being, addressing disparities, and informing policy and decision making. Attendees also had opportunities to break out into small groups to share and learn about dashboard initiatives that have driven cross-sector collaboration, advanced public awareness of critical issues, and surfaced critical gaps in services and access.

The convening underscored that data dashboards are more than just tools; they are public infrastructure that can shape the trajectory of health and equity efforts across the country. Envoy found this forum to be extremely valuable to the ongoing data dashboard sustainability learning series, where we will take the insights and leverage new connections to continue providing high-quality strategy to cohort participants as they continue their journey toward organizational resilience and financial sustainability.
